Weather conditions

Vintage 2022

The meteorological trend of Spring 2022 was characterized by higher average temperatures and by incredibly low rainfalls.
Compared to the last 2 years, moreover, 2022 stood out as the year in which temperature exceeded 30 degrees Celsius for more than 41 consecutive days.
In addition, 2022 was the driest year since 1800, with a – 46% cumulative precipitation (from the beginning of the year to the end of July) lower than the average of the last 30 years.
Some refreshing rainy days at the end of August allowed the vine to recover from water stress and to complete the ripening process.
Vintage 2022’s similar to 2021 in quantitative terms and is remarkably interesting in qualitative terms.

Vintage 2021

Winter 2020/2021 wasn’t particularly cold, with mild temperatures and gentle downpours towards the final months of the season.
We experienced a long spring with temperatures below average that delayed the blooming for some weeks.
In May we enjoyed beautiful, warm spring days. The weather was dry with a few occasional shower.
Summer was hot and dry and went on until the end in complete absence of rain.
Owing to the summer drought, the vines suffered from water stress stopping the maturation of the grapes between July and August.
Therefore, at the beginning of August we had to intervene in the vineyards by thinning out the grapes in order to grant the survival and thriving of the best ones.
Hopefully, the ripening of the grapes could continue to its fulfillment thanks to some rainfalls at the beginning of September.
We reached top qualitative results, but we had a production loss of approximately 15 -20%.

Vintage 2020

Abruzzo swung from the mild temperatures of February and early March (with peaks of 20 degrees Celsius on the coast) to their abrupt lowering in mid-April without serious consequences for the new shoots.
From the end of May onwards, beautiful days and high temperatures help foster the development of good vegetation and the normal shaping of well-formed and uniform bunches of grapes. The lack of rainfalls from June to August caused major problems, especially in hilly and mountainous areas in non-irrigated and sun-exposed soils. This situation led to a decrease in the weight of bunches and to a production drop of about 18%.

Vintage 2019

Low winter temperatures established the conditions for some snowfalls even on lower slopes.
The rainy and fresh springtime caused a slowdown in the growing of vegetation, in the flowering, fruit setting and ripening of the grapes.
From June temperatures rose abruptly and remained constantly high during the whole summer throughout september.
Vineyards could find any recovery from the summer heat only after some refreshing rainfalls. The harvest was low in quantity, but had a high quality level.

Vintage 2018

Vintage 2018 was characterized by a winter with average temperatures and average rainfalls. Spring began later than usual.
Temperatures jumped above the season’s average only in the month of May.
During summer we had seasonal temperatures that never went above the 32 °C.
This trend let us obtain a good quality. Wines produced during this vintage stand out for their traits of freshness and fruitness.

Vintage 2017

The rainy winter with some light snowfalls at low altitude let the soil accumulate important water supplies.
Vintage 2017 has been a very hot one already beginning from springtime. Temperatures were higher than the average.
Summer was Complete ripeness.

Vintage 2016

The vintage 2016 is remarkable, even if the weather conditions lead us to take crucial choices.
Spring rainfalls left room for a warm summer, characterized by average temperatures, by hot but never torrid days.
September took along mild temperatures and was characterized by changeable weather and sunny days broken by occasional rainshowers.
In ordert o reach high quality standards we focused on the work in the vineyard, attentively selecting the best grapes and frequently checking their state of health.
The accurate focus on the selection of the best grapes allowed us to produce a remarkable vintage 2016 that stands out for the great structure and ist traits of freshness, elegance and aromatic depth.

Vintage 2015

Winter 2015 was rather mild with average rainfall typical of the season.
Spring was quite mild and temperatures were slightly over the average, whereas rainfall settled on the same level as the previous year.
During summer, the heatwave caused an increase in temperature over the average of the season: temperatures reached up to 38°/39°, whereas rainfall settled at about 2/3 days per month.
These optimal weather conditions let us harvest perfectly mature grapes with a pretty high percentage of residual sugar.
Vintage 2015 will certainly be remembered as an exceptional vintage for the good quality of the grapes.
Owing to the thorough selection of the best grapes in our vineyards, there isn’t a great increase in quantity, but the quality is estimated as a top one.

Vintage 2014

Winter 2014 was mild with an average temperature between 8°C and 14°C, while during springtime the average temperature was between 16°C and 20°C with heavy rain till the end of May.
June and July average temperature increased between 23°C and 29°C with alternation of sunny days and rainy ones (8/9 days per month). August wasn’t particularly warm: temperature never exceeded 30°C.
From the beginning of September till the harvest time (end of October), temperature was about 23°C/25°C. This allowed us to draw out the best of a difficult season concerning the weather.
The Harvest was very hard and we had to take care a lot of the vineyard (defoliation, selection of the best bunches on the plant) in order to get the best of production in terms of quality.
We can say that the result has been really flawless! Wines of the vintage 2014 are amazingly interesting ones!

Vintage 2013

During winter 2013 temperatures and rainfalls were at normal levels for the time of the year. It then followed a rainy spring with below average temperatures.
The unusual cold spring with heavy rainfalls and unsettled weather pattern from may until late June delayed the beginning of summer and put back the ripening of the grapes up to 15 / 20 days.
Summer then broke through at the end of June until the beginning of September and was characterized by high temperatures and dry weather.
September was in the average with pleasant temperatures and dry days and this ideal weather conditions allowed the further ripening of the grapes.
In terms of volume, harvest gave quantities similar to last year. Whereas, the quality is very good and will produce fruity wines, with a good point of acidity, even if the alcoholic volume will be slightly lower than the previous two vintages.

Vintage 2012

The harvest 2012 was really interesting.
The winter season was in the average until February 2012, when a series of heavy snowfalls affected our area (from 2nd until 12th February), reaching 80/100 cm of snow.
From march until the beginning of may the temperature was in the average, then it began a nice period of warm, sunny and well-ventilated days.
The summer season bloomed in early june, with dry and hot temperature even in late September.
Owing to the September heat, the young vines were harvested 2 weeks before the regular date. At the same time we posticipated the harvest of the oldest vines of 2-3 weeks in order to obtain a light withering of the grapes on the vines itself.
The grapes were healthy and we can talk of a good vintage in terms of quality, whereas, in terms of quantity, the production has decreased in comparison to 2011, this previous vintage being already low.

Vintage 2011

The harvest 2011 was characterised by a long and rainy winter, immediately followed by a spring with temperature below the average. At a first stage, these climate conditions have caused a slow growing of vegetation.
Starting from July, however, the temperature is abruptedly risen, leading to hot and dry days during the months of august and september.
The drought of august and september has brought about a fast ripening of the grapes and a subsequent decrease in wine production, which was of 39% in our company. The harvest started 20 to 25 days in advance if compared to the previous years.

Vintage 2010

Overall, 2010 was a good growing year.
The long, wet winter was followed by snow at lower altitudes in March and these conditions combined to ensure a good build-up of water deposits. The fine, hot summer weather allowed the grapes to mature to a good, healthy condition. Several days of rain at the beginning of September restored the vines’ strength.
The period 10 September until mid-October enjoyed warm, sunny days with temperatures that dropped by as much as 10 degrees overnight.

Vintage 2009

The rainfall during winter and spring created a ground water supply that sustained the vines throughout the dry, challenging summer.
The summer of 2009 was very hot with temperature highs reaching extreme levels, even in the first 10 days of September.
This was a very interesting growing year for reds, producing wines of firm structure and above all great elegance. Overall volume dropped by approximately 10%.
